Cleric charges Buhari to show more commitment in tackling unemployment

Archbishop of Bendel Province, Anglican Communion, Reverend Friday Imaekhai, has charged the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to double its efforts at tackling the country’s worsening unemployment.

He argued that creating jobs, especially for young Nigerians would be the panacea to eliminating crimes and other vices among the youths.

Imaekhai stated this while addressing congregants at the Second Session of the Sixth Synod of the Esan Doicese, Anglican Communion, with the theme: Christian Stewardship, at Saint Mark’s Anglican Church, Ujoelen, Ekpoma, Edo State.

He said government at all levels should confront unemployment aggressively in order to discourage youths from the temptation of resort to fraudulent means to sustain themselves.

“When the youths are provided job opportunities, the temptation of resorting to fraudulent practices to keep body and soul together will be greatly reduced, if not completely eliminated,” he said.

Archbishop Imaekhai also charged the country’s leaders to prioritise Nigeria’s unity, saying the nation derives greater strength when it is united than when disunited.

“When we lay more emphasis on things that unite us, rather than those things that divide us, we will be seen to have set the necessary machinery in motion for peace, which is necessary for development,” he said.

He also demanded an end to the growing infractions on the fundamental rights of Nigerians, noting that it negates the tenets of democracy worldwide.

“Under the present administration, several journalists have been hounded and detained with the active connivance of state security apparatuses.

“In line with the democratic tenets all over the world, especially in civilised nations, democracy, unlike autocracy or fascism, allows for freedom of movement, speech and association, he added.

He also dared government at all levels to tackle insecurity, which he said, has continued to pose serious threat to the government and the governed.
