Outgoing governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha has said that he desires to see his successor, Emeka Ihedioha surpass his achievements in office.
Okorocha, who stated this while addressing members of the 52-man Joint Transition Committee and Ihiedioha at Government House, Owerri, assured Imo people of smooth transition come May 29, 2019.
He stressed the need for the committee to acknowledge that it was no longer time for politics but purposeful governance, hence they should use the opportunity to formulate polices that would move the state forward.
His words: “Wise men know when to stop politics and embrace governance but fools combine both. Politics and political parties are only vehicles to get us to the point of governance.
“Of course the transition would be smooth, but we must focus on what we can do to improve on what we have done. So, we must look for what we can do as a people to move the state forward. That should be your major concern.
“I want this transition to be rancor-free and people must not bring their personal matters into the collective dream of Imo State. Let us work together for the common interest of our state.”
Okorocha also directed relevant officials to provide a befitting accommodation, logistics and all other protocol arrangements for Ihedioha with immediate effect.
“I have beaten the records of my predecessors and I want the incoming governor to beat my record. This is what is called progressive society. I pray that anybody coming after me should be better,” he added.
Responding, Ihedioha, who was represented by a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Chris Okewuluonu, restated his commitment to ensuring continued peace and harmony in the state throughout his administration.
Ihedioha also reminded the committee members that its overall essence was to ensure smooth, hitch-free and successful handover on May 29, adding that Imo people expect nothing but good results.
Speaking, Secretary to the State Government, Mark Uchendu, disclosed that they were on a courtesy visit to the governor to acquaint him with what they have achieved in the task before the committee, which inaugural meeting held at the weekend.
He hinted that the initial composition of Ihedioha’s side was pruned to 31 members.
While Uchendu chairs the committee on Okorocha’s side, Ernest Ebi leads Ihedioha’s side. The joint committee will work towards a hitch-free transition on May 29.
