Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc has announced the deployment of EVAC+CHAIR emergency evacuation equipment, positioning itself as the first ground handling company in Nigeria to introduce the technology into its operations. The move is aimed at improving safety and comfort for passengers with reduced mobility while also strengthening emergency response procedures at airports nationwide.

 

According to a statement issued by the company’s Head of Corporate Communications, Adetola Vanessa, the acquisition forms part of SAHCO’s broader strategy to invest in innovative solutions that make air travel more inclusive and secure. The company explained that the equipment will be used both during emergencies and in day-to-day boarding and disembarkation processes where passengers require additional support.

 

The EVAC+CHAIR is a globally recognised evacuation device that has been in use since 1982. It is designed to move people safely along stairways without manual lifting. The chair comes with gravity and friction control features, secure harness systems, and durable track mechanisms that allow trained staff to assist passengers efficiently. SAHCO said this will help reduce physical strain on ground personnel while ensuring that passengers are moved with dignity and care.

 

Mrs. Adenike Aboderin, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of SAHCO, speaking on behalf of the Chairman, Dr. Taiwo Afolabi, said the decision reflects the company’s belief that air travel must be accessible to all. She stated that the organisation remains focused on delivering services that meet international standards and address the needs of every passenger, regardless of physical ability. She further noted that investing in modern equipment is central to improving safety, efficiency and customer satisfaction across SAHCO’s operations.

 

This latest development builds on SAHCO’s record of prior investments in aviation technology. In 2025, the company became the first ground handler in Nigeria to acquire the Rapiscan Itemiser 5X, an Explosive Trace Detection system endorsed by the US Transportation Security Administration. That equipment enhanced the company’s capacity for security screening and aligned its operations with global aviation safety requirements.

 

SAHCO added that its continuous investments in equipment, technology and staff training have contributed to faster aircraft turnaround, improved service delivery and stronger partnerships with airlines. The company currently provides ground handling services at all commercially active airports in Nigeria, a footprint it says allows airlines to maintain consistent standards as they expand their route networks.
