The Nigerian Navy has called for a stronger partnership with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) to enhance safety of navigation on the country’s waters. The Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Mustapha, made this call during a familiarization visit to NIMASA Headquarters.
Rear Admiral Mustapha noted that the longstanding partnership between NIMASA and the Nigerian Navy has led to improved security in the maritime domain. He emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between the two agencies to sustain the gains made in maritime safety. The FOC West also commended NIMASA for providing and maintaining platforms under the Deep Blue Project, which have greatly enhanced the Navy’s operations.
The Nigerian Navy’s partnership with NIMASA has yielded several benefits, including improved safety standards within the maritime sector. The two newly acquired hydrographic vessels, NNS Lana and NNS Ochuzor, have significantly enhanced NIMASA’s operations in wreck removal. The integration of NIMASA’s C4i Centre with the Navy’s Falcon Eye system would also considerably improve security within the nation’s maritime domain.
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NIMASA, Dr Dayo Mobereola, described the improved security in Nigeria’s territorial waters as the backbone of President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification policy. He emphasised the need for the two agencies to collaborate in delivering a safe and secure maritime space that enables maritime activities to thrive. The NIMASA DG also acknowledged the support of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, CON, noting that his commitment to the development of the Blue Economy sector has continued to yield results.
The Nigerian Navy and NIMASA have reaffirmed their commitment to partnership and cooperation in the areas of hydrography and wreck removal. The two agencies are working together to enhance maritime safety and security, and to promote economic growth and development in the maritime sector.
