Over 81 per cent of taxable adults and businesses in Nigeria do not pay their income taxes, the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) has disclosed.
The revelation was contained in a presentation to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) by the Research Director of the group’s Fiscal Policy Roundtable (FPR), Tayo Oyedele, during a visit to the Director-General of NGF, Asishana Bayo Okauru, in Abuja.
Accompanied by chairman of the FPR, Dr. Sarah Alade, Oyedele was seeking the involvement of the governors to remedy the problem for the nation to maximise its collectable revenues.
Deploring the apathy, he said available statistics indicate that only 20 million of Nigeria’s 200 million population pay tax.
